An (almost) lifelong Westchester resident, Sam has reported on all facets of Westchester since he graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in print journalism, including stints at North County News and The Examiner. 'A Taste Of Taiwan: New Restaurant Opens In Garfield A North Jersey eatery is aiming to introduce people to the diverse world of Taiwanese cuisine. Bowlba recently opened at 59 Passaic St. in Garfield, bringing the taste of Taipei to the area. Family IDs Drowned Teen At Devil's Hole Miguel Pena, a 16-year-old Newark, resident drowned at the notorious Devil's Hole in Cedar Grove Community Park on Saturday, July 8. Pena's mother is a single mother of five and had emigrated from the Dominican Republic 11 months ago. A fundraiser was created by Pena's cousin, Mardelin Payano, to assist the family with funeral expenses. As of Monday, July 24, more than $3,715 has been raised. Swimming at Devil's Hole has been banned since a 2018 drowning due to currents that can make it very dangerous. To view the fundraiser, click here.

Man Fatally Shot In Newark: Authorities A 32-year-old Newark man was fatally shot on the early morning of Saturday, July 22, authorities said. At 3:16 a.m., police responded to a report of a shooting on the 600 block of Broadway, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. They found Carlos Zayas outside at the location suffering from a gunshot wound, Stephens and Fragé said. Man Extradited Back To NJ, Charged With Murdering Sister-In-Law, 9-Year-Old Niece Everoy Morrison, a 44-year-old Roselle resident, has been extradited back to New Jersey from Maryland to face charges of bludgeoning his 45-year-old sister-in-law and 9-year-old niece to death, authorities said. Morrison was charged with two counts of first degree murder back in May. In April, Roselle Police Officers were called to a home on the 200 block of West 7th Ave on a report of two missing people, Union County Prosecutor William Daniel said. Newark Helps One Of Its Own Open Restaurant Inayah Blocker has recently opened her own restaurant, thanks to community support. Blocker, a Newark native, opened Beyond Soul, a soul food and seafood restaurant at 40 Jay Street on Tuesday, July 11, in the city. Passaic County Family Whose Home Destroyed By Fire Sees Community Support The Fuquene family has been reeling since their West Clifton home was destroyed after being struck by lightning and catching on fire. While the family of seven made it out safely, they lost their home and personal belongings and are currently staying in a hotel, which has put a financial strain on the family. Body Found Near Holland Tunnel A dead woman was found about a mile from the Holland Tunnel on the evening of Wednesday, July 19, authorities said. At 6:52 p.m., Jersey City police saw the body at 18th Street and Jersey Avenue, Kimberly Wallace-Scalfione, a spokeswoman for the mayor's office said. The woman was determined to be dead at the scene and the medical examiner's office responded, Wallace-Scalfione said. The death does not appear to be suspicious, Wallace-Scalfione said.

$74K Worth Of Fentanyl, Cocaine: Four Busted In Secaucus Four people were arrested in Secaucus on Wednesday, July 19 and found with $74,000 worth of fentanyl and cocaine, authorities said. Franklin Rodriguez-Liberto, a 40-year-old Jersey City resident, Richard Pena-Rodriguez, a 37-year-old Union City resident, Steven Reyes, a 44-year-old North Bergen resident and Christopher Delacruz, a 24-year-old New York resident, were arrested, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.
