NJ Dairy Queen Operator Violated Child Labor, Wage Regulations: Feds A New Jersey Dairy Queen franchise owner is facing a blizzard of fines. The U.S. Department of Labor has determined Kostantine Menegatos, who operated four DQs in the Garden State, violated federal child labor and wage regulations, forcing him to pay $14,000 in penalties and more than $9,000 in back wages. Menegatos failed to pay one employee minimum wage and did not pay 14 workers time and a half overtime premium for working more than 40 hours in a work week, the DOL said.  The franchise owner also employed 15-year-olds more than three hours on school days, more than 18 hours a week …

Ax-Wielding Man Pepper Sprayed By NJ Transit Police In Hoboken A 45-year-old man wielding an ax was pepper-sprayed by NJ Transit police officer at Hoboken Terminal on Wednesday, Oct. 25, authorities said. Joseph Dietz, of Hillsborough, was brandishing a large camping style ax and aggressively advancing toward a fleeing man, New Jersey Transit police said.  Officers positioned themselves between Dietz and the fleeing man, police said. Dietz refused to drop the ax, forcing officers to deploy pepper spray to deescalate the situation, police said. Firefighters and police responded to the 500 block of Maple Avenue on reports of a structure fire and discovered the basement blaze in a multi-family home, police said. Two occupants and several pets, including six birds, were safely evacuated, police said. Multiple roadways in the area remain closed and residents are encouraged to avoid the area, police said.

The Westwood institution open for more than 50 years, which closed after being sold over the summer when the original owners decided to retire, has reopened at 20 Washington Ave.  The new owners are calling it The Tavern at Iron Horse, the new owners announced on Facebook three months after the sale. While a menu has not been provided, the restaurant promises "exceptional food, exciting cocktails and quality service."

Two Kids Arrested For Burglary, Theft After Pursuit: Nutley Police Two juveniles were arrested for burglary and theft after leading Nutley police on a foot pursuit on Saturday, Oct. 21, authorities said. The juveniles targeted a vehicle on Elm Street and several other vehicles on Grant Avenue, police said. When they opened the rear door of a Grant Avenue residence, an alarm went off and the homeowner confronted them, police said. The two fled east on Grant Avenue before being apprehended near the Passaic River, police said. Police had recently arrested two other juveniles for breaking into cars on Yale Street and Franklin Avenue.
