NJ Dairy Queen Operator Violated Child Labor, Wage Regulations: Feds A New Jersey Dairy Queen franchise owner is facing a blizzard of fines. The U.S. Department of Labor has determined Kostantine Menegatos, who operated four DQs in the Garden State, violated federal child labor and wage regulations, forcing him to pay $14,000 in penalties and more than $9,000 in back wages. Menegatos failed to pay one employee minimum wage and did not pay 14 workers time and a half overtime premium for working more than 40 hours in a work week, the DOL said. The franchise owner also employed 15-year-olds more than three hours on school days, more than 18 hours a week …

Big Winner! Rutherford Lotto Player Wins $50K A lotto player in Rutherford had a very lucky day on Saturday, Oct. 28. One Power Ball ticket matched four of the white balls and the Power Ball, winning $50,000. The ticket was sold at Addison Shop on Park Avenue. The winning numbers were: 14, 24, 50, 59, and 64. Newly Minted Millionaire! $1 Million Lotto Ticket Sold In Passaic County A lottery ticket sold in Clifton has earned someone a new title: millionaire. A Mega Millions ticket matched five of the white white balls in the Friday, Oct. 27 drawing, netting the winner $1 million. The ticket was sold at Dave's Variety on Clifton Avenue. The winning numbers were 11, 32, 43, 57, and 70. The Gold Mega Ball was 06, and the Megaplier Multiplier was 04.

Ax-Wielding Man Pepper Sprayed By NJ Transit Police In Hoboken A 45-year-old man wielding an ax was pepper-sprayed by NJ Transit police officer at Hoboken Terminal on Wednesday, Oct. 25, authorities said. Joseph Dietz, of Hillsborough, was brandishing a large camping style ax and aggressively advancing toward a fleeing man, New Jersey Transit police said. Officers positioned themselves between Dietz and the fleeing man, police said. Dietz refused to drop the ax, forcing officers to deploy pepper spray to deescalate the situation, police said. MKT Diner Sets Opening Date In Closter In the land of diners, a new concept has opened in Bergen County. Country MKT Dinner, which is offering farm to table dining, will be opening in Closter. It appears to be replacing the shuttered Valley Diner, which occupied the space for more than 25 years. A grand opening is set for Sunday, Nov. 19. Six Birds Evacuated In Two-Alarm Blaze: Linden Police Nobody was injured after a two-alarm fire began in the basement of a home in Linden on Monday, Oct. 30, police said. Firefighters and police responded to the 500 block of Maple Avenue on reports of a structure fire and discovered the basement blaze in a multi-family home, police said. Two occupants and several pets, including six birds, were safely evacuated, police said. Multiple roadways in the area remain closed and residents are encouraged to avoid the area, police said.

Rooftop Bar, Amphitheater Among Renovations To 150+ Year North Jersey Hotel The historic Grand Summit Hotel is getting a facelift. The Summit institution, which has existed since 1868 at 570 Springfield Ave., is undergoing a renovation by Landmark Hospitality with an expected opening in the 2024 season, as "The Albion Summit." The hotel will downsize from 150 rooms to 100, and offer a restaurant, a lounge and a co-op working space after the first phase of renovations are done, which is expected to take eight months. Westwood's Tavern At The Iron Horse Opens As New Concept Months After Being Sold The Iron Horse is back. The Westwood institution open for more than 50 years, which closed after being sold over the summer when the original owners decided to retire, has reopened at 20 Washington Ave. The new owners are calling it The Tavern at Iron Horse, the new owners announced on Facebook three months after the sale. While a menu has not been provided, the restaurant promises "exceptional food, exciting cocktails and quality service."

Two Kids Arrested For Burglary, Theft After Pursuit: Nutley Police Two juveniles were arrested for burglary and theft after leading Nutley police on a foot pursuit on Saturday, Oct. 21, authorities said. The juveniles targeted a vehicle on Elm Street and several other vehicles on Grant Avenue, police said. When they opened the rear door of a Grant Avenue residence, an alarm went off and the homeowner confronted them, police said. The two fled east on Grant Avenue before being apprehended near the Passaic River, police said. Police had recently arrested two other juveniles for breaking into cars on Yale Street and Franklin Avenue.

North Jersey Teen TikToker Wows Off-Broadway Performing at a well known cabaret venue in Manhattan without a soundcheck would be nerve-wracking. For 16-year-old Echo Picone, of Warren County, it was just another night on stage. The teen recently performed at 54 Below, as part of their "54 Sings Olivia Rodrigo" night.
