Man Tried To Rob People Outside State Capitol, Police Say A man from the region is facing charges after he allegedly tried robbing people near the state Capitol. State police in Albany were called just before 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, with a report that a man with a knife was demanding money from people on Madison Avenue, outside of the Empire State Plaza. Working with Albany Police, troopers identified the suspect as 39-year-old Shawn Haymon, of Albany, police said. Aspiring Politician From Upstate NY Dies At Age 23 As a 22-year-old, Alejandro “Alex” Foppoli moved to South Carolina from New York and attempted to unseat a three-term incumbent in the state’s House of Representatives. Though he lost in the primary election, Foppoli’s family said he more than proved his political chops, earning the endorsements of several local and national political groups along the way. Now, less than a year later, that same Albany-area family is in mourning following Foppoli’s death Saturday, Sept. 3 at the age of 23, according to his obituary. A cause of death was not given. In Fairfield County, Bell’s Shellfish will officially open the doors to its new shop in Stratford on Thursday, Sept. 8. 1 Killed, 2 Others Injured After Shots Fired Into Car In Darien (Update) One man is dead and two others are injured following a suspected drive-by shooting in Fairfield County. The shooting was reported just before 4 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, on I-95 in Darien. Toy Gun Sends Capital District Middle, High Schools Into Lockdown Word that a student had brought a gun to campus sent two schools in the region into lockdown Wednesday morning, Sept. 14. Authorities In Region Issue New Warning Of Phone Scammers Posing As Cops Law enforcement authorities in the region have issued a new warning about an increased number of phone scammers trying to trick people out of their hard-earned money. The latest scam involves criminals posing as law enforcement officers claiming that victims need to pay money in order to avoid criminal charges, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office said. Stranger Held Dying Pedestrian's Hand After He Was Struck By Car In Capital District A pedestrian who lay dying after being struck by a car in the region was not alone as he took his last breath, thanks to the generosity of a stranger. Emergency crews in Rensselaer County were called just after 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, with reports that a male pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle in the town of Brunswick, near Highway 2 and Blue Factory Road. 17-Year-Old Pointed Loaded Gun At Mom During Argument In Capital District, Police Say A teenage boy is behind bars after allegedly pointing a loaded handgun at his mother during an altercation in the region. Police were called at around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11 in Albany with reports of a domestic assault involving a gun at a home on Second Avenue. When officers arrived, the victim told police that she and her 17-year-old son got into an argument when the boy pointed a loaded handgun at her, Albany Police said. County Elections Commissioner In NY Committed Voter Fraud, Feds Say One of two men tasked with overseeing elections in a New York county was led into a federal courtroom in Albany wearing handcuffs Tuesday, Sept 13, accused of voter fraud. Rensselaer County’s Republican Elections Commissioner, Jason Schofield, age 42, of Troy, was indicted on 12 counts charging him with using other people’s names and dates of birth to fraudulently apply for absentee ballots.
